Concrete Pond Construction
If you are planning to build a big garden pond in your backyard that can hold large gallons of water and last for a lifetime, then you might just about plan on using concrete as the building material. Concrete garden ponds can be built to huge dimensions and if built right can last for a lifetime without giving rise to any maintenance issues.
If you have planned to go for a concrete pond construction, taking professional help would be a much better idea, given the fact that constructing a concrete pond requires much expertise in terms of pond building. Even when hiring someone to build the pond, make doubly sure that the person you are dealing with has a good deal of experience in concrete pond building. This is because a poorly constructed concrete pond will give your more problems in terms of maintenance that will cost you a lot more than what it took to install the pond in the first place.
How to Build Concrete Garden Ponds
The primary process in the construction of a concrete pond is the establishment and outlay of pond dimensions. Once this is done the pond area is excavated depending upon the depth required. Properly cut metal bars and forms that offer support to the concrete are then laid in place. Depending upon the size of the pond, concrete is poured in one piece or in sections to create a four to five inch thick layer. Concrete is poured starting from the bottom and moving to the sides and finally to the top of the pond. If your pond is big and requires the concrete to be poured in sections, special care must be taken to ensure that the junctions are properly done in order to prevent any leakage problems in the future. Finally, the concrete is painted with black pool paint or with a dark masonry sealant before filling it with water.
The major drawback other than the heavy construction cost of a concrete pond is the fact that they tend to increase the pH level of water. This is why it becomes extremely important that the pond pH be measured at all times and periodic adjustments made to keep it at proper level. Only after proper pH level is achieved should fish and other aquatic life should be introduced in the pond.
