Biological Filter
Garden ponds require filtering systems, which can be made up of mechanical and biological filters. Biological pond filters combine with beneficial bacteria to keep a garden pond healthy and clear. These filters remove debris, algae and dirt and allow beneficial bacteria to thrive in the pond. External biological filters are usually better than submerged ones. If there is room, an external filter such as a waterfall filter can be installed. If there is not enough room, a submerged biological filter with added bio-media like ceramic rock or bio-balls can be installed.
Although many people buy UV filters, UV can kill bacteria as well as algae which defeats the purpose of a biological filter. Biological bead filters are filled with thousand of tiny poly-beads that provide a larger surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. Bead filters are generally able to clear water more efficiently than other biological filters. Biological filters are required if there are fish in a garden pond. It should not be cleaned very often but on the occasions when it needs to be cleaned, this should be done with tap water and not chlorine as this kills bacteria.
