Fall Foliage
Fall foliage can be a major problem when it comes to garden ponds. The leaves from deciduous trees fall incessantly during fall until there are no leaves left on the branches. These leaves fall to the ground below and if there is a pond nearby it will quickly become covered with these leaves. When leaves fall into pond water and decay; the decaying process uses up oxygen in the water and releases carbon dioxide. This means that the pond plants and fish may suffocate and die. Another problem is that it produces an excess of algae due to the nitrogen that is released during the decaying process.
Preventing these problems can be done by fitting a net over the pond that will catch the leaves before they reach the water. The leaves need to be removed regularly. Adding a fountain to the pond will put oxygen back into the water. The pump can be clogged up by falling leaves however. A UV filter solution may be of use at preventing algae. Regularly clearing the garden and pond of leaves and debris will efficiently reduce the risk of algae and oxygen starvation in the pond.
