They are a small, cheap and colourful coldwater fish making them one of the most popular pond fish available. There are also many different variations of goldfish although not all are hardy enough to survive in an outdoor pond. Goldfish eat mosquito larvae and so are useful when a pond has a mosquito problem. Goldfish can survive if ice forms on the surface of the pond for a short amount of time as long as there is oxygen remaining in the water and the pond does not freeze solid. If the pond is likely to freeze solid, then the goldfish must be removed or they will die. During winter goldfish slow down and stop eating, often keeping to the bottom of the pond. This is normal and their activity increases again in the spring. A filter and some plants are essential for the care of the fish as they keep the pond clean and oxygenised and the plants provide a food source for the goldfish. Goldfish can live in ponds along with other coldwater fish. Goldfish can quickly over breed and unless the excess eggs are removed, the pond will become overstocked with goldfish. Some other varieties of fish such as orfe eat goldfish eggs which is a suitable solution to this problem. More terms explained
Maintain the water level in your pond such that they stay in the right limits both in summer and rainy seasons.
Replace pond water in periodical intervals for safety and good health of aquatic life. Clean filter system every so often to keep away clogs and obstructions affecting the water flow. Remove the decayed plants from pond bottom to keep up safety of aquatic lives. Add minimal dechlorinator to lessen chlorination effect in fresh water. Offer proper aeration to the plants to keep up freshness of water, taking care of the aquatic plants with proper fertilizers.
To keep your ponds clean add some helpful bacteria and natural cleaning agents that feed on fish wastes. They help convert ammonia to nitrites further to nitrates that acts as a natural pond filtrating agents. They are absorbed by the aquatic plants to produce oxygen thus forming a nitrogen cycle. This action reduces the phosphorous and organic waste content in pond avoiding algae formation. Pond maintenance may sound to be simple but it requires continuous care to be taken keeping a balance over healthy ecosystems and clean water preventing algae.
