Water Gardens

Water gardens are essentially garden ponds and water features that are normally filled with water plants. The four basic types of water plants include marginal plants, which grow in the shallower edges of the pond, submerged plants which grow beneath the water level, floaters which float freely on the water surface and floating leaved plants which root at the bottom of the pond and grows until it's leaves reach the surface of the pond. Some of the most popular plant varieties are water lilies and hyacinths. Water plants provide important oxygen to the water and transform carbon dioxide. In colder climates, the plants may need to be removed if a lot of ice is expected, as the ice will usually kill the plants. It is also possible to install a pond de-icer or a fibreglass cover to protect the pond. A floating thermometer is useful when monitoring the temperature of the water garden.

Water gardens along with other water features such as fountains and waterfalls are becoming increasingly popular due to the calming and serene effect they have on a garden and it's occupants. They can be attractive and soothing and come in various designs to suit any particular taste.
