Flood Control Ponds Built in Tennessee
To avoid a repeat of the 2003 deluge in Cleveland, Tennessee city officials are going to being construction of four flood-control ponds. The entire construction is expected to take eighteen months to complete. The flood control ponds will be aimed at protecting Cleveland's largest business area and the surrounding residential areas.
In Spring of 2003 extensive flooding caused partial closure of what was a Maytag plant at that time. The building is now currently being used as the Whirlpool Corporation Cleveland division. Workers for the city of Cleveland have already begun development of the first pond with the other three to follow soon.
A ceremony for the project was held during which the mayor Tom Rowland and Republican congressman Zach Wamp spoke. The total cost of the project is expected to be 2.5 million, 550,000 of which is coming from federal funds. Wamp stated that the project was a good example of what could happen when the local, state and federal government started working together in a timely manner so that issues could be resolved. After the completion of the project Whirlpool is expected to grow as a business and be able to compete according to Wamp when he talked about the Woolen Mill Branch detention pond project.
